Our very own Dr. Paige Roth was recently featured in a Des Moines Parent article titled “How to Fight the Flu.. Naturally.” This article offers great insight from Dr. Paige on fighting the flu, and also includes some practical tips on flu prevention.

Dr. Paige’s Tips on Fighting the Flu

Listed below are the tips from Dr. Paige within the article that we can take to make sure our bodies are functioning at their best during these cold, winter months.

1. Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body. They also carry nutrients to your cells while flushing out the bacteria. Due to the colder weather, we tend to feel less thirsty during the winter months, so be sure to drink up!

2. Eating a Well-Balanced Diet

Nothing will strengthen your immune system better than a well-balanced diet. Red meat, beets, apples, strawberries, oranges, bananas, lemons, free-range chicken, cucumber, broccoli, spinach, blueberries, pomegranate, and much much more. The more you avoid processed foods and cook from scratch instead, the healthier your body will be!

3. Get Outside

Getting outside and getting some fresh air can do wonders for your body. When your skin is exposed to sunlight it creates Vitamin D within your body, which is important for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improved resistance against foreign invaders.

4. Exercise

Exercise can improve your health and overall quality of life. And during the cold, winter months it becomes harder to stay consistent with workout routines due to the colder weather and shorter days. One thing you can do to help stay motivated is to set exercise goals. Goal setting is an important part of success in any venture and can help you direct your energies toward a final outcome.

5. Visit a Certified Chiropractor

There is no greater influencer on your immune system than your nervous system. Your nervous system controls and coordinates all functions within the body, including your immune system. Chiropractic was first linked to improved immunity during the epidemic of 1918. Since then studies have shown that specific chiropractic adjustments can increase disease-fighting white blood cells within the body, which results in increased immunity. By restoring proper communication within the body, regular chiropractic care can be used as a great boost for natural immunity within the body.
